At first it was exhausting and I thought I would never make it. After a few more changes in my eating, I started gaining more energy and kettlebell classes started getting easier. I was performing daily chores again and staying up later. Shari had me fill out a food journal and commented on how I could improve. Not only have I lost weight and body fat, I have gained muscle.

Lost over 4 inches in the first month

"Since starting my workouts at Iron Clad Fitness, I’ve lost 4 and 1/2 inches and continue to get stronger with every workout!

I haven’t done a lot of heavy weight training so the first day I stepped foot into Iron Clad I was nervous at the size of some of the kettlebells. Thanks to the classes and learning proper technique, I’m now able to swing a 48kg kettlebell, or as it’s affectionately known “the beast”, and can deadlift two 48kg kettlebells. I’ve started learning more advanced techniques within the swing and can now do hand to hand swings where you transfer the weight from one arm to another at the height of the swing. These are all things I couldn’t imagine myself being able to do in such a short time.

Shari has also been helping me with her habit based nutrition coaching. Anytime I tried to “diet” in the past I would last a couple of weeks restricting myself but then, eventually would fall off and revert back to whatever I was doing before. They say it can take 30 days to make things a habit, Shari is helping me make slight changes to my diet, one at a time, so that they stick and won’t just be tossed aside."

One year ago, my friend Robin motivated me to join her in our friend Shari Wagner’s Transformation Contest at Iron Clad Fitness. I wasn’t in it to win it and didn’t. It was about supporting two wonderful friends and maybe being motivated to establish an exercise routine to continue after the contest was up. A year later, I reached that goal and more.

The combination of exercising and controlling blood sugars brings on more challenges to a type 1 diabetic than I will go into detail about here. But a year later in addition to losing weight, I lost inches off several areas, I feel less depressed, and I decreased the amount of insulin I have to take on a daily basis. I don’t lose my breath going up and down my stairs to bed, or walking my dogs. When I show people my driver’s license, they don’t really think it is a picture of me. In ways, I look and feel as I did when I was in college before I was diagnosed.

My relationship with my workout buddy and trainer has grown. And I work out with a lot of new friends at Iron Clad Fitness. Here’s to another great year. Thanks Shari and Robyn.

Teresa is quite the success story, and she is proof that proper technique is key in kettlebell training. Teresa hurt her back several years ago doing kettlebell swings on her own at home. Her back pain persisted for years.

At the end of 2014, Theresa reached the end of her rope and called me to start private training. We took things slowly, to help build a nice base of strength and confidence in the basic movements before visiting the swing. Teresa gave lots of care and attention to her technique, understanding that it was going to make the difference in whether she felt pain or not.

In just a couple of weeks of training, Teresa told me that her back was already feeling so much better. A couple of months later, Teresa’s back pain, the pain that had plagued her daily for years, was gone! When Teresa was ready to start attacking the swing, she approached it with a whole new mindset – one of control and mindfulness in her movements. She didn’t rush the process and was open to any and all corrections I gave her. Soon enough, Teresa was swinging with the best of them and she decided to switch to group classes.

It has been so much fun to watch Teresa transform before my eyes. In less than a year, she went from being in chronic pain and afraid of swings to being excited to learn snatches. Teresa is strong and fit and she embodies the spirit of Iron Clad with her dedication to her training.

She wasn’t sure that she’d be as accountable and motivated in group classes, but she really embraced it and she very rarely misses a scheduled class because she has come to love it so much!

As a working professional, I find myself seriously pressed for time and often put working out at the end of my list of things to do. So it was a godsend to find Iron Clad Fitness and their efficient kettlebell workouts that combine cardio and strength. I saw strength increases right away which helped me stay motivated while I was losing weight. My core is the strongest its ever been! It’s amazing how helpful in everyday life that can be.
