When I was first diagnosed with food intolerances, namely gluten and diary, Elana’s Pantry was my go-to and savior. While there are now many sites that offer gluten and dairy free recipes, these have been my mainstay Thanksgiving recipes.
These recipes are wonderful even if you don’t need to eat gluten and dairy free, and you can always substitute for gluten and dairy containing ingredients to match your personal preferences.
Cranberry Sauce: I don’t always have dried currants, and this cranberry sauce is so flavorful that I don’t even miss them when I omit them! I also prefer using honey vs agave.
Cranberry Apple Stuffing: I don’t usually make the bread for this one. I have in the past, but I’ve come to find that this recipe is equally good with a store-bought loaf of gluten free bread. (Canyon Bakehouse is my favorite brand of bread)
Kale With Cranberries: This is a tasty dish when you need a simple and quick green vegetable to add to your table.
Green Bean Casserole: This one is a bit time consuming (as many dairy-substituted recipes are) but it is SO worth it! The parsnips, nutritional yeast and other flavors blend in such a way that you’ll totally forget there’s no dairy. We think it tastes better than the original green bean casserole, and it gets even better with the leftovers.
Mashed Sweet Yams – no recipe here, we just chop and boil some yams (sometimes bake them), then put them in the food processor with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of Himalayan salt, and voila! They come out so creamy this way and are even better the next day.
Chocolate Pumpkin Pie: While looking for a pumpkin pie recipe, I came across something that I think is even better – a chocolate pumpkin pie. For me, anything with chocolate in the name is the first choice! I don’t usually mess with making my own crust and instead just buy a ready-made gluten free pie crust to make life quicker and easier, though I have made the one linked in the recipe. I usually add extra chocolate chips because there’s no such thing as too much chocolate, but be warned that it will be more like a chocolate pie vs a chocolate pumpkin pie.
